The compound that makes cats react is nepetalactone — an essential oil that activates olfactory receptors linked to euphoric behavior: the cat rubs its face, rolls, chases its own tail, gets hyperactive for a few minutes, then settles.

About 30% of cats lack the receptor gene and simply do not react, no matter the product's potency — that is genetics, not herb quality.
